Area 6 Groundwater Extraction and Treatment Systems Design, NAS Whidbey Island, WA

Project Description: Design and post-design engineering services for two groundwater extraction and treatment systems to address volatile organic compounds (VOC) and 1,4-dioxane. Design services include preparing plans, specifications, engineering analyses, and cost estimates. Post-design services include engineering services during construction and preparing performance compliance and monitoring plans.

• Design Services
  • Engineering analysis (basis of design, performance objectives for meeting the regulatory requirements, key system components, and engineering calculations)
  • Provided process, mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical engineering expertise
  • Prepared detailed drawings presenting system configuration, pipe runs, finished grades, mechanical components, process controls, etc.
  • Produced specifications (UFGS model)
  • Provided engineer’s estimates and bid schedules
  • Produced 30%, 60%, 90% and 100%/ready-for-construction submittals
  • Treatment design included an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP); contains a continuous in-line process that operates and an adjustable feed water pressure and flows where strong oxidizers can be injected into the contaminated water; designed to operate in three different modes: AOP or Ozone only, or alternating Process design accommodated provisions for adding additional design components to address PFAS in the future
• Post-Design Services
  • Prepared system performance compliance and monitoring plans; included sampling and analysis plan, accident prevention/health & safety plan, investigative derived waste plan, environmental protection plan
  • Prepared operations and maintenance manuals
  • Provided engineering support during construction include reviewing construction contractor submittals and responding to requests for information/clarification
